Lot Essay
Warp: goat hair, mixed grey-tan, natural, coarse, Z2S
Weft: wool, tan, natural, Z2S, 2 shoots alternating, first straight, second wavy, some warp skippage
Pile: wool, Z2, asymmetric open right, no warp depression, H8xV14
Sides and Ends: both not original
Colors: brick, old ivory, surmeh, pale yellow, dark brown, rose brown, deep blue-green, bronze
The present lot, although unmistakably Arabatchi, has recognizable qualities that deviate from the typical examples of this tribal group. The open right knotting, the lack of cotton combined with wool in the wefting and the absence of magenta silk in the pile are all Arabatchi aberrations. The highly stylized kelle flowers in the elem are found on early 19th century Tekke ensis and the overall effect is reminscent of Tekke work, yet, the coloration and its most salient stylistic and technical features led one to attribute this piece to Arabatchi.
