These candlesticks are based on George II examples which were inspired, in turn, by French Rgence designs. A pair of this model made in London by Charles Hatfield in 1728 is illustrated in Vanessa Brett, The Sotheby's Directory of Silver, 1986, p. 197. The style was revived later in the 18th century and again in the Victorian period. A pair with the Royal badge of the Prince of Wales made in 1795 by Robert Sharp was sold in these Rooms, April 18, 1991, lot 349. Other recorded examples include a set of four by Robert Garrard of 1846, sold in these Rooms, October 18, 1989, lot 26, and two pairs by the same maker of 1874 and 1875, sold at Christie's, Geneva, November 17, 1980, lot 13.
