Circular on a spreading circular base with gadrooned band, the part-fluted body engraved on one side with coat-of-arms, crest and motto against a foliate cartouche, the handles formed as realistically modelled eagles with outstretched wings, the part-fluted cover engraved with a crest and surmounted by a part-fluted turned finial, marked on base and cover

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Sir Oswald Mosley of Ancoats, Lancashire, who succeeded his father as 2nd Baronet in 1798. He sold the manor of Manchester to the Corporation of that town for l200,000, just two hundred years after his purchase by his ancestor, Sir Nicholas Mosley in 1596.
