AN ARCHAIC BRONZE WINE VESSEL, ZUN

Of compressed pear shape and raised on a spreading pedestal foot with straight rim, the upper body cast in relief with two small animal masks flanked by pairs of long-tailed birds, all reserved on a band of leiwen above a bowstring band, the smooth blackish patina with some pale green mottling and some pale green encrustation on the interior, with an inscription on the base of the interior

Compare the very similar vessel illustrated by Bernhard Karlgren, "Some Characteristics of the Yin Art", B.M.F.E.A., No. 34, Stockholm, 1962, pl. 6(b) and another, but with the addition of a bowstring band encircling the foot, also illustrated by Karlgren, B.M.F.E.A., No. 32, Stockholm, 1960, pl. 42(a).
