A FOUR-CASE LACQUER INRO
edo period (19th century), signed kajikawa bunryusai saku
Decorated in gold, silver and iroe hiramaki-e, kirigane, togidashi, roiro and kimpun depicting courtly scenes, posssibly from Chapter 27 (Yokobue/The Flute) of The Tale of Genji, on one side a woman is shown seated in profile in a villa playing a koto behind bamboo blinds by moonlight, probably the Second Princess at the Ichijo Mansion; on the other side Yugiri plays the flute for the Second Princess on an autumn evening
