Lot Essay

In private correspondence, Fred G. Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorisches Documentatie, The Hague, notes that the style of the present work, as well as the presence in the painting of certain still life objects - notably the roemer, the taper and the arched cherry branch - reflect a knowledge of Jan Davidsz. de Heem's paintings, circa 1642/3. Although there is no conclusive evidence to support a full attribution to the artist, Mr. Meijer suggests that de Heem may have assisted in some of the execution of this painting.

We are grateful to Mr. Fred G. Meijer for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
