The present work seems to be the earliest treatment of this winter subject by van Goyen. In 1651 he explored the composition further in two drawings in which the horse-drawn sledge remains the central focus of the composition, but where the sutler's tent and figures on the ice are moved to create different emphases (see for example Beck, op. cit., I, p. 70, nos. 197-8).
