The present painting formed part of a predella for which four panels are in the Joe and Emily Lowe Art Gallery, University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida, where they are attributed to Gaudenzio Ferrari (see F.R. Shapley, op. cit., figs. 356-59). In his review of Shapley, Federico Zeri (Burlington Magazine, no. 111, July 1969, pp. 455-58, and reprinted in Giorno per giorno nella pittura, V, 1998, pp. 159-62) adds a sixth panel, a Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, in the Muse des Beaux-Arts, Dijon. Zeri rejects the connection to Gaudenzio Ferrari and instead suggests that they are reminiscent of a cycle of frescoes in the castle of Belcaro, near Siena, attributed to Peruzzi. A further panel, also showing the beheading of a saint, is in the Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, Holland. (C.E. de Jong-Janssen, op. cit., fig. 15).
