The present work can be dated to the 1620s by comparison with, among other paintings, de Momper's Mountain Landscape with distinguished Company of Riders, in the Prado, Madrid, (Inv. no. 1592), in which the figures are by Jan Brueghel I, and Wide Mountain Landscape with Castle, sold at Christie's, London, July 11, 1980, lot 73 in which the figures are by Jan Brueghel II (see K. Ertz, Joos de Momper der Jngere, 1986, p. 484, no. 79, illustrated p. 483 and color pl. 8; and p. 543, no. 271, illustrated p. 545).
Momper collaborated with several artists who painted the staffage for his compositions, and a note confirming the collaboration of Vrancx and Momper is recorded in Momper's inventory of January 21, 1623 (see Ertz, op. cit., p. 51).
