The erection of monuments allegorizing or personifying the Enlightenment ideal of Reason was commonplace during the period of the French Revolution. The symbolic inclusions of Phrygian caps and bundles of fasces in these sculptural groups frequently served to identify representations of Liberty.

We are grateful to Mme. Lebrun-Jouve for confirming the attribution to Taunay from a photograph; the picture will be included in her forthcoming catalogue raisonn of Taunay's paintings.
