Stylistically, the present painting may be compared to the Baptism of Christ, in the Bigongiari collection, Florence, a painting dated to 1635 by Mina Gregori, and similar in its rich handling of paint, delicate sfumato and verdant landscape.
The subject was clearly popular with the artist, since two other versions are known. The first at Arniston House, Midlothian is particularly close in format while the second, signed and dated 1630, in the collection of Marchesa Maria Luisa Mannucci Benincasa Capponi, is similar in the treatment of the angel's diaphanous robe, although the figure of Hagar is depicted in a more contemporary costume.
The same model as that posed for Hagar is portrayed as Saint Cecilia in a signed and dated work of 1632, offered at Sotheby's, London, April 5, 1995, lot 188.
