Russian born, Sasha Stone traveled to Paris in the early 1920s where he discovered the work of the Surrealists and Man Ray. By 1925 he had already been given his first exhibition in Berlin where he exchanged his Russian name Alexander Serge Steinsapir for Sasha Stone. During the 1920's Stone's work was based on the modernist influences surrounding him, including montage and superimposition, while in the 1930's he turned to portraiture and nude studies. His wife Cami Stone, also a photographer, often collaborated with him.
