Lot Essay

According to James Yarnall, "During their stay in Tautira, Tahiti, La Farge and Adams resided in a house belonging to Ori a Ori, a Tahitian sub-chief of the Teva clan. This view looks from the door of their house toward the cooking house belonging to Ori a Ori, which sat close to the beach and reef."

This watercolor will be included in the forthcoming publication by Yale University Press of the late Henry La Farge's catalogue raisonn of the works of John La Farge, completed by James Yarnall and Mary A. La Farge.
