Volcn nevado depicts Popocatepetl, a volcano in the valley of Mexico City that was a constant theme for Dr. Atl's work. In fact, it was the subject of one of his earliest, if not his first landscape pictures, dated 1909. He also demonstrated his fascination with this volcano in his writings by publishing a volume of poems in homage to the mountain called "Las Sinfonas de Popocatepetl" (Mexico Moderno,1921) and a monograph of its history and evolution entitled "La Actividad del Popocatepetl" (Polis,1938).
From the 1930's onward , Dr. Atl developed the style for which he is so praised and admired. He slowly abandoned the thin brushstroke with a delicate subtle palette for a stronger, more energetic style introducing his own personal chromatism. He made his colors from resins to which he applied pigments of the most rich and brilliant tones, known as Atl colors. He also pioneered cyclorama vision and what he called "aerial landscape", a technique later adopted by David Alfaro Siqueiros. Dr. Atl was greatly motivated by the emotions generated by majestic beauty, vibrant colors, the unparalelled strength of natural phenomena, and the extreme impotence of man against nature.
