Lot Essay

Soto belonged to the post-war generation that radically transformed abstraction into a rigorous artistic manifestation deriving from optical illusion. In the late 50s, the artist's main interest was to transform matter into vibrations, pure light and illusion in reaction to Tachisme and Informal Painting. He was in search of the objet-tableau and a new language that could replace those of traditional painting.
