Lot Essay

Tilsa studied in the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes (1954-1959) under Fernando de Szyslo and muralist Carlos Quizpez Asin. She later traveled to Paris, where she studied humanities at la Sorbone and futhered her artistic education at the cole des Beaux Arts de Paris.

During the decade of the 70s various figures emerged in the field of Peruvian painting who re-created in their art the myths and dreams derived from Surrealism. Among these painters, the universe created in the art of Tilsa is undoubtedly the most extraordinary. Her forms, both poetic and erotic, display an interest in figuration and local themes, however distant from the indigenista movements of previous periods.
