Lot Essay
Adriana Verejo has always been interested in Brazil's colonial inheritance. In her images, she traces aesthetic sources from the Eastern Portuguese colonies that came to Brazil, such as religious icons, architectural elements or decorative objects, and incorporates them into her work. She treats the canvas surface as a human body suffering the violent relation between the colonizer and the colonized. This is represented in the thickness of the paint and the imitation of violent methods such as scalping, implying the complexity of cultural integration.
