Lot Essay
A pioneer kinetic sculptor, Chilean born Castro-Cid lived in New York City and exhibited extensively in the United States and Europe throughout the 1960's and the 1970's. His later paintings express the influence of On Growth and Form (1917), a radical text by Scottish zoologist and classical scholar Sir D'Arcy Thompson. The author proved that protoplasm flows in accordance with forces outside an organism; Castro-Cid expressed this visually in terms of formal distortions.
