Georges-Henri Manuel was a poet and friend of Toulouse-Lautrec. He is also the subject of a portrait in oil, done in 1891 (Dortu no. P.377; coll. Bhrle Foundation, Zurich). In the oil painting Manuel's pose is decidedly Whistlerian, and, indeed, the profile view of him in the present pastel is perhaps a reference to Whistler's famous portrait of his mother.
The painting seen immediately behind the sitter is Jeanne, 1884 (Dortu no. P.231), a study of a model which Lautrec painted in the studio of fellow students Henri Rachou and Albert Grenier.
