Painted with smooth strokes in a palette of subdued yellows and greens, Portrait of Seurat is an example of Cross's early oeuvre influenced by the work of Bastien-Lapage. It was not until 1891, the year of Seurat's death, that Cross produced his first fully Neo-Impressionist paintings inspired by the work of the late artist and Signac. Cross first showed at the Salon of 1891. In 1884 he began to exhibit with the Indpendants and continued to contribute to these exhibitions until his death in 1910.
Ronald Feltkamp has confirmed the authenticity of this painting.
