Lot Essay

According to the late Marie-Madeleine Aubrun, the theme of the fisherman in a boat was one that Dupre reworked often in his paintings from the 1860s. Deux hommes dans un bateaux depicts the scene at the close of the day in order to convey a sense of melancholy.

Thophile Chauvel (1831-1910) executed an engraving of this painting.
