During a sojourn in August, 1892 with his friends the Le Bas family, Lhermitte made several pastels of Granville, a walled city on the English Channel. From the mid-1880s, Lhermitte began working in pastel and concentrating more on the landscape elements in his work. The drawings of Granville show the city from various vantage points as well as at different times of the day. Perhaps taking his cue from the Impressionists, many of whom he knew, Lhermitte has manipulated the pastel with broad, layered strokes in which the forms of the city dissolve into the morning light.
