Lot Essay

The smallest of Marden's images, this series recalls the artist's interest in the trompe l'oeil architectural devices found in Roman fresco painting. This effect is achieved through the division of the plane into blocks, in turn resembling window and door panels. The spatial quality and depth of perspective achieved through the juxtapositioning of the colors allowed Marden to introduce an intricate theatrical element to these etchings.
