Lot Essay

Steir's Waterfall series is a unique exploration of space, color and light. Through the gradation of tones from top to bottom, ink drips, drypoint lines and arcs, Steir develops a dramatic sense of motion and drama. On the creation of this series, the artist has said, "What I like about making prints is that the process is very layered. Etching for me is half way between sculpture and drawing rather than between painting and drawing. The hard ground is the grid the idea is formed on. I think of it almost as tri-dimensional."
