MARK TWAIN AND THE EXPLORER, FRIDTJOF NANSEN
A fine, dignified pose of the author in tie, coat and fur-collared overcoat. Inscribed in ink at bottom to the wife of the famed arctic explorer Nansen (1861-1930): "To Mrs. Frithjof Nansen with best salutations of S.L. Clemens. May 1898." At the top, Twain has added a three-line inscription referring to the explorer: "He has had his desire -- he has seen the pole. I have had mine, for I have seen him." Nansen, a Norwegian scientist and arctic explorer, had made several attempts to reach the North Pole, his 1895 expedition attracting worldwide attention.
