WASHINGTON, GEORGE, President. Printed document signed ("G:Washington") as Commander-in-Chief, Continental Army, countersigned by Philip Van Cortlandt (1749-1831), and Johnathan Trumbull, Jr. (1740-1809), Headquarters, [New Windsor, N.Y.], 7 June 1783. 2 pages, folio, 337 x 202 mm. (13 1/4 x 7 15/16 in.), EDGES OF THE SHEET UNTRIMMED, neatly accomplished in manuscript, minor spotting, otherwise in very good condition for a document most often found in poor condition. WASHINGTON GRANTS AN HONORABLE DISCHARGE to Sargeant Philip Stuvis in the Second New York Regiment, who has "faithfully served the United States Six Years and Six Months." The discharge is dated three days before Washington's famous letter to the states announcing his retirement, because the "great object," independence, had been realized at last (though the final peace treaty had not yet been formally signed in Paris).
