Provenance: William Robertson (1721-1793), historian and principal of the University of Edinburgh from 1762 to 1792, who wrote several histories, including a history of America published in 1777 (presentation inscription from the author on the title verso: "To the Revd. Dr. William Robertson Principal of the University of Edinburgh as a testimony of the Author's great Respect & sincere Regard").

PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. Blane's second treatise on naval medicine which incorporates much of his earlier work on preserving the health of seamen. Blane was a strong proponent of Lind's views on scurvy, and as physician to the British Fleet in the West Indies effectively introduced improvements in living conditions among seamen.
