BOERHAAVE, Hermann (1668-1734). Institutiones et experimenta chemiae. Paris [Leiden?], 1724.
8o (156 x 95 mm). Engraved folding plate and one engraved illustration in text. Contemporary vellum, spine ink lettered.
Although bearing a Paris imprint, this edition was probably published in Leiden. "This spurious edition of Boerhaave's chemical notes so incensed Boerhaave that on 9 October 1726 he published a warning in the Leydische Courant against booksellers selling such works, and on 25 October asked the academic Senate for help in protecting him from any further abuses at the hands of unscrupulous printers and booksellers. He also later countered the work with an authorized chemical textbook, the Elementa chemicae (1732), which remained the authoritative chemical manual for many years. All copies of the Elementa carried Boerhaave's autograph signature, attesting to the work's authenticity and protecting against pirated editions" (Norman). Duveen pp. 83-84; Lindeboom 444; Norman 257.
