Large 4o (362 x 270 mm). 50 engraved plates by V. Ple after Pierre Jean Franois Turpin (some occasional minor foxing, mostly marginal, a few plates with some very pale marginal browning). Original paper-backed pink boards, uncut, upper cover with printed label (upper joint cracked, covers worn and soiled). Provenance: unknown recipient, possibly de Chambery (inscribed by the recipient on the front pastedown: "ex dono clarissimi authoris Genevae 1818"); Bonjean de Chambery (signature on the front pastedown).
PRESENATION COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. Turpin modeled his style after van Spandonck and Redout, and Blunt considers him "possibly the greatest natural genius of all the French botanical painters of his day ... his drawings of botanical details have rarely been surpassed" (Blunt, pp. 180-81).
