FIRST EDITION of Cavalieri's first work. In this work on conics he provides some interesting historical data on the origin of the theory of the conics among the Greeks, which according to Cavalieri, can be found in the gnomonic requirements. Lo specchio ustorio ("The Burning Glass") also contains Cavalieri's theory of conics with applications to optics and acoustics, including the idea for the reflecting telescope--an invention he is sometimes credited with first discovering.
