4o (249 x 192 mm). 4 engraved plates by Elizabeth and Catherine Haussard (illustrating Coulomb's essay), numerous other engraved plates. Contemporary French mottled sheep, spine gilt (some rubbing and minor wear).

FIRST PRINTING of Coulomb's prize-winning essay on friction. It remained a standard in this field until the advent of molecular friction studies in the twentieth century. "Coulomb showed that in general there is an approximately linear relationship between friction and normal force; but he extended the investigation considerably to show complex effects due to difference in load, materials, time of repose, lubrication, velocity, and other considerations" (DSB).
