Published posthumously, by the author's son, also John, possibly against the author's wishes. iathantoswas written before the author took Holy Orders in 1615, and probably during the preceding years, which the author devoted almost exclusively to the study of theology. The earliest mention of the book is in a letter dated 13 February 1614, which suggests that it had been written not long before. The author later became Dean of St Paul's, and was known as one of the most eloquent and learned preachers of the day. Wing D-1858; Norman 650.
