Large 2o (385 x 250 mm). Collation: +2 A-H4 I2 K1 L4. 41 leaves. 7 full-page engraved illustrations, printer's woodcut device on title, ornamental woodcut initials and tailpieces. (Some dampstains to lower margins, several illustrations cropped within plate mark, one (H4r) touching image, the final four plates with flaps folded down or cropped touching numbers.) Modern half tan calf, buckram sides.
FIRST EDITION. Although published after Fabrici's death, De formatione ovi et pulli is his earliest surviving treatise on embryology. The work is divided into two parts, of which the first deals with the formation of the egg and the second with the generation of the chick within the egg. The plates include the first printed illustrations of the development of the chick.
