Engraved frontispiece portrait by William Faithorne (1616-1691), signed "W:F: fec:", after the portrait, ascribed to Cornelius Janssen (1590-1664), in the possession of the Royal College of Surgeons. (Some browning.) Contemporary English calf (folds trimmed away and textblock oversewn, rebacked). Provenance: W. Stonehouse, purchased for 14s/4d (inscription on title page); "1706 cost 10d" (inscription on frontispiece); author's name and "London 1723 York" lettered on flyleaf.

FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. The chapter on parturition was the first original work on the subject by an Englishman. According to Keynes, "many copies of the book lack the engraving, and many have never contained it."
