7 engraved sheets (258 x 361 mm). (Some minor foxing.) Unbound, in cloth case. Provenance: The author's proof copies (each plate SIGNED IN INK BY LAVOISIER and Gabriel de Bory, Vice-Secretary of the Academy; plates II and II inscribed by Lavoisier "Bon tirer aprs les corrections"); Denis I. Duveen (bookplate on cloth folding case).

"Lavoisier ... if he had not given himself up to chemistry, might have become one of the most illustrious among the founders of geology" (A. Geiokie, The Founders of Geology, London: 1897). This memoir and the geological atlas of France (see lot 602), were Lavoisier's only contributions to geology. The memoir draws a distinction between littoral and pelagic deposits, and the seven large plates gave the first outline of a correct classification of the tertiary deposits of the Paris region. Duveen & Klickstein 101; Norman 1296.
