FIRST EDITION of "possibly the first psychiatric self-help book" (Norman). Hunter and Macalpine consider Mandeville's work "the first book on minor mental maladies 'writ by way of Information to Patients' rather than 'to teach other Practitioners'" (Hunter-Macalpine).
