RARE FIRST EDITION of the most popular surgical text of the 17th century. Johannes Schultes, city physican of Ulm and one of the leading German surgeons of his day, invented many new surgical devices and bandages. This comprehensive catalogue of all known surgical instruments and procedures of the period was published after his death by his nephew Johannes Schultes. 22 of the 43 engravings illustrate surgical instruments; the remainder depict in great detail a variety of surgical procedures, including methods of bandaging and splinting, reduction of dislocations, passage of sounds, amputations, brain surgery and neurosurgery, all described in detail in the text, which includes 100 case reports. The book proved extremely useful to practicing surgeons and was frequently reprinted during the next few decades and translated into Dutch, English, French and German. The later editions were however all printed in quarto or octavo formats, and this first edition is thus the only one to contain the original folio engravings.
BM/STC 17th century S1741; Garrison-Morton 5571; Heirs of Hippocrates 466; NLM/Krivatsy 10746; Norman 1912.
