SPALLANZANI, Lazzaro (1729-1799). Viaggi alle due Sicilie e in alcune parti dell' Appennino. [Vol. VI: Opuscoli sopra diversi animali, che servono di appendice ai viaggi alle due Sicilie.] Pavia: Baldassare Comini, 1792-1797.
8o (205 x 130 mm). 11 engraved folding plates (light worming at beginning and end of some volumes.) Contemporary speckled boards.
FIRST EDITION. An account of Spallanzani's journey in 1788 to Southern Italy to investigate the volcanic activity of Vesuvius, Stromboli, Vulcano and Etna. He measured the flow rate of the lava from Vesuvius and studied boiling lava in the crater of Etna. From a cavern near Stromboli he noted that gas explosions forced up the red-hot lava and ejected massive rocks, an observation fundamental to volcanology. The first five volumes were published 1792, the sixth volume on animals was added in 1797. Ward & Carozzi 2096; Norman 1984. (6)
