FIRST EDITION. Wiseman gained experience as a military surgeon during the English Civil War, for much of which he was in attendence upon the Prince of Wales. At the Restoration in 1660, he was made "surgeon in ordinary for the person", and the following year surgeon by Royal Warrant to Charles II. He is credited as "the first of the really great surgeons who lifted the surgical profession from its state of subordination to the physicians" (DNB). His works reflected careful and scientific observation. Dr. Johnson considered them "a mine of good surgical nomenclature" (DNB). Wing W-3110; Norman 2252.
