LARGE PAINTED WOOD SCULPTURE OF GUANYIN
Song Dynasty
The bodhisattva shown seated with hands in dhyanamudra, wearing full robes well carved to fall in crisp, graceful drapery around the body and below the crossed legs as if the robes were draped over an edge, with beaded bracelets encircling the wrists, the beaded necklace spanning the chest framed by the raised V-necked opening of the robes, the long face carved with small mouth, straight and slightly spread nose and the long graceful slits of the eyes inset with black glass pupils, all creating a serene expression, the hair dressed in long knotted plaits falling onto the shoulders and pulled up into a topknot behind the foliate crown, with traces of orange, pink, black and flesh-colored pigment
45in. (115.6cm.) high
