Lot Essay

For other beakers and saucers from the same series see Hans Syz, et al., The Catalogue of the Hans Syz Collection, Washington, D.C., 1979, fig. 357 and Property from a North Palm Beach Estate, Christie's, New York 27 April 1984, lot 243.

The decoration on all three Chinese beakers and saucers, after designs by the Dutch engraver Petrus Schenk (1654-1713), has been traditionally ascribed to Ignaz Preissler who painted primarily in Eisenrot, black and gold. However, other Hausmalerei are known to have had access to the same engraved design sources.
