Lot Essay

The present plate is from a service made for Heinrich Graf von Podewils (1695-1760) minister to Frederick the Great and Knight of the Prussian Order of the Eagle, probably given to him for his role in allying Saxony and Bavaria with Prussia during the first Silesian war. The majority of the service was formerly in the Ole Olsen Collection. Examples have more recently been sold by Christie's Geneva, including a plate from the estate of Andreina Torre, 16 November 1992, lot 136. Cf.
