Lot Essay

Wilhelm Kaspar Wegely with the aid of Johann Benckgraff (of Hchst and Frstenberg) and with encouragement from King and Crown started a manufacturer in 1752. Although of high quality, the material lacked fluxing and tended towards the opaque and in turn made firing large pieces difficult. The firm closed is 1757. The uppermost impressed mark is said to indicate the paste and the lower the model number.
See Gisela Zick, Berliner porzellan aus der Manufaktur von Wilhelm Caspar Wegely, Berlin, 1978 where two other examples of this model are listed.
