In 1879, Rodin accepted an invitation from Albert Carrier-Belleuse, the director of the Manufacturer de Svres porcelain works, to create decorations for vases. He worked there until about 1882, but the exact number of designs he produced is unknown. According to the Svres archives, Rodin's models were relegated to the back of the warehouse until 1897, when the first of his vases was put into production.
