Letter to Sir George Russel Clerk
manuscript on paper gold squares applied at intervals across it, 14ll. of black nast'liq, further lines written diagonally in the right margin, in its original paper wrapper inscribed with the date (12 Shawwal 1252) and the addressee and stamped with the seal impression of Wazir al-Daula Amir al-Mulk Muhammad Wazir Khan Nasrat Jang Bahadur, 1223 (1808-9 AD), with accompanying red wax seal (from the exterior cloth envelope now lacking), India, AH 1252/1836-7 AD - 59 x 20.4cm.

Lot Essay

Sir George Russel Clerk (1800-1889) went to India in 1817. He held appointments in Bengal, Rajputana, Delhi, Umbala and Ludiana. After being on the North-Western Frontier during the first Afghan War (1839-42), he was appointed as the Envoy in Lahore in 1842. His later appointments included Govenor of Bombay, Under Secretary for India and a Member of the Council for India.
This letter must have written to him by the wazir in the early part of his career.
