Lot Essay

The inscription reads "dha bhai jag-ji". 'Dha bhai' means 'foster brother, son of a 'dhaya' or wet-nurse'; thus the sitter is the son of the royal wet-nurse and foster brother of the maharaja, possibly Man Singh. Jag-ji is a pet name, short for Jagat or similar.
