Portrait of a noble,
gouache heightened with gold on paper, wearing orange skirts and turban, the noble stands facing right and holds a sword in his right hand and a flower in his left, cloudy sky above, white margin, red leaf, inscribed on verso under a red wash 'kalam chitara Paimji likhatu', (very light spotting and rubbing), Rajesthan, Ajmer area, circa 1800 - 26 x 19cm.; and a pair of ladies, beside a pavillion an older woman appears to comfort a younger one, whose skirts are pulled at by a small dog, a walled city and scenes of daily life visible beyond, black margin, central India, circa 1800 - 18.6 x 11.6cm.

Lot Essay

The artist, Paimji, was born at Chitor but worked manly at Sarwar, near Ajmer.
