Iconographical figure,
ink and colour on paper, probably after a figure from the Iconologia of Cesare Ripa, possibly 'Lewdness', a woman puts her hand to her breast as a winged cherub with his arms around her thigh unties his ?blindfold, a dog looks on, on a blue, red, yellow and black marbled ground, blue margin within gold and coloured rules, buff leaf, (repaired tear, some rubbing), Mughal or Deccan, probably 17th century - 10.6 x 7.2cm.; verso an ascetic, gouache heightened with gold on paper, the dark skinned ascetic sits on a tiger-skin rug by a fire outside his cave beside a lake, mounted on pink leaf, Rajesthan, circa 1800 - 22 x 14cm.

Lot Essay

Cesare Ripa was born in 1560 and produced his Iconologia in 1593. The first edition to have engravings was published in 1603.
