The Hamzanameh is considered to be the first true Mughal manuscript. It was commissioned by the emperor Akbar in 1562 using artists he had brought from the Persian court ateliers and took some 20 years to finish. It originally comprised approximately 1400 paintings, about 10 of which now survive.
