Lot Essay

Trutpert Schneider (1804-1899) and his young son Heinrich were based at Ehrenstetten, near Karlsruhe, but travelled extensively throughout Germany documenting royal palaces and other important civic buildings and sculpture. The stamp on the mount of this photograph was used until 1856, and this format of stereo daguerreotype was made using two exposures on one plate, one half being blacked out while the other half was exposed.

The majority of the surviving work of the Schneiders is preserved in the family archive. Few examples have appeared on the market with the exception of a group of architectural daguerreotypes formerly from the collection of the Margraves and Grand Dukes of Baden which were sold at Christie's, London in 1996.
